E-Invoicing for SMEs: What Businesses Under AED 50 Million Must Do Before July 2027

Most attention on UAE e-invoicing has focused on large businesses, which must go live on 1 January 2027. But businesses with annual revenue below AED 50 million are next: they must appoint an Accredited Service Provider (ASP) by 31 March 2027 and begin mandatory e-invoicing from 1 July 2027.

That can sound distant, but for an SME with a small finance team, the preparation takes time. Here is what to do and when.

Does it apply to your business?

The mandate covers business-to-business and business-to-government invoices. Business-to-consumer sales are currently outside its scope. If you invoice other businesses, it very likely applies to you.

What changes

  • Invoices must be structured electronic data in the UAE’s Peppol-based PINT AE format. PDFs and emailed invoices will not qualify.
  • You will send and receive invoices through an ASP accredited by the Ministry of Finance.
  • Your ASP will report the required tax data to the FTA.
  • You remain responsible for invoice accuracy and VAT treatment.

A practical timeline for SMEs

  • Now to December 2026: clean customer, supplier and product data; review VAT coding; check whether your accounting software can connect to an ASP.
  • January to March 2027: shortlist and appoint an ASP from the Ministry’s list, before 31 March.
  • April to June 2027: test issuing and receiving invoices, including credit notes, and train staff.
  • 1 July 2027: mandatory go-live.

Start with your accounting system

For most SMEs, the simplest route runs through their existing accounting software. As partners of Xero, QuickBooks Online and Zoho Books, we assess whether your set-up and data are ready and what needs to change. See our cloud accounting and accounting software services, and our earlier article on the 30 October deadline for large businesses.
